JLA, White Tiger, X-factor and more

So I'm back to weekly reviews after finishing my Master's degree. Here we go.

JLA #4 - I'm getting more excited about the JLA. It's too bad I had to wait four months to do so. Green Lantern, Arsenal (possibly Red Arrow soon?), and Black Lightning are great characters and really drive the series. Red Tornado is a bit of a pansy right now, but I'll give him time. As for the Big 3, get off your ass and do something. JSA went through there photos in 1 issue. I takes them 3. The shocking ending though, not to my liking.

White Tiger #2 - If your looking for a classic butt-kicking comic, you've found it. It's refreshing to see something so normal in the world of shock value and death today. I like it, I suggest checking it out.

X-factor #14 - This book continues to be great. You really got a feeling for all the characters last issue with Doc Samson, and now I'm just so invested that I couldn't imagine dropping this book.

Ghost Rider #6 - Legend Richard Corben takes over as artist for two issue. It's really bizarre to say the least. If you're a fan of his Heavy Metal stuff, pick it up. If your a GR fan like myself, it doesn't matter who picks it is, I gotta own it. I'm still not excited about the story ark. I'm waiting for the promised "explanation" of what's happened. Also, when is that lost issue coming out?

Green Arrow #69 - I'm going to give away the pseudo-shocking ending. Brick is going to team up with the Red Hood. G.A. and Bats go head to head against there more recent villains. If your a fan of the Red Hood or Green Arrow, pick it up. Otherwise, don't bother.

World's Greatest Superhero Team

After months of waiting and waiting, and buying ALL the back issues, Justice Society of America has FINALLY been released, and yes, it is that good. Unlike JLA, JSA has a full roster and line-up after 1 issue. The issue, just like Johns entire JSA run, is full of mystery, action, and world altering events. Maybe he'll take the time to kill of more crappy DC characters that no one like (Dagger Fate anyone?). I love the fact that DC is hinting more and more towards Kingdom Come, I'm so intrigued.

Masters of American Comics

If you live in New York or New Jersey, you have to see these exhibits. I went a couple of weekends ago to the one in the Newark Museum where they had all original comic strips like Popeye and Dick Tracey. It was awesome. I plan on going to the Jewish Museum exhibit soon. Here some links!

Asking a New Question

It seems that DC is killing off another Charlton Comics character and replacing him with someone else. This someone being Renee Montoya. Though I think these characters have been amazing during 52, I'm really upset that they're killing off the original question. He's an amazing character and now they're just going to bury him with Ted Kord. Totally depressing.

In other news, Neil Gaiman hates Nancy Grace! Woot. Read Eternals.

Hulk Smash 100 times!

That's right, our big green friend has hit 100, and to celebrate Marvel put out an oversized issue with a Civil War tie-in and some old issues. I love Planet Hulk, it's just an amazing fresh innovative idea for the Hulk. Plus, he gets to smash...a lot!

Go out there and pick up as many back issues that you can, because Planet Hulk is awesome. I hope World War Hulk is just as good.

On a side note, I went to the PS3 pre-release party in NYC, played Ultimate Alliance, and LOVE IT! Button Mashing goodness, go get it for your favorite system!

And there was a Son

It has arrived, and we can all be in awe of the Donner. R.D. (as I will refer to him today), Geoff Johns, and Adam Kubert have begun their run in Action Comics, and they get right to the point. There's a new Superboy in town, and this time, he's actually a boy! Though Adam's art was a little rough at times, the story has got my interest peaked, and I can't wait to see what's next.

Also, for all you jerks who don't buy Nextwave...go lick a goat!

Wave goodbye to Nextwave

Aparently not enough of you are reading Nextwave. Why? Because it's being canned. How anyone does not love this book is beyond me. It's hysterical. Maybe people just don't like comedy in their funny books. Maybe people just don't get Ellis' humor. Maybe this is another ploy by Beyond Corp. to take over the world by cancelling the book they're featured in. As they say, the devil's greatest trick was making the world believe he doesn't exist.

Does Heroes Make Any Sense?

I don't know if you watch Heroes, the TV show "geared" towards comic book fans, but it really doesn't make any sense. I mean, as Sci-fi fans, we allow the rules of nature to be broken, but we also ask for some sort of logic to surround it. Mutants are the next step in evolution, Superman is from Krypton, and Batroc the Leaper is a loser. The problem with Heroes is that it mixes a lot of different themes together and pretends it all will fit. The people are all getting super-powers, and suddenly it all happens now. Ok, this suggest something mystic or scientific experiment, that it is all happening by coincidence. But, there is some dead scientist suggesting that they are the next step in evolution. This disproves the argument before, but then why are the all 'evolving' now. Also, they've all got some greater purpose in the grand scheme of things, prevent the nuke I guess, so how is it genetics if it's fated? Can they really tie this all together to make sense? My thoughts, no. The only thing I like is that Tim Sale's art is everywhere. Other than that, I'm starting to loose interest.

Delays delays delays

Just when I feel like Marvel and DC are making up for the huge delays in August, it seems like they fucked up yet again.

Civil War #5 should be coming out this week. It's coming out next week. Wonder Woman is now bimonthly. Ultimates #12 came out two weeks ago, and the next issue? Two months from now. Ultimate Hulk vs Wolverine, and All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder? Fuck if I know.

It's really disappointing to see all of these delays, especially with all of these big name books. These huge events within DC and Marvel are supposed to be attracting all sorts of new readers, but when you wait months between books, all of that planning and "good" storytelling is all for shit.

Said thing really. At least Seven Soldiers #1 is finally coming out soonish.

Out with the Crap and In with the Good.

The completely awful Nightwing run of Bruce Jones is over and in the saddle is Marv Wolfman who did the 1 thing Jones couldn't do. Make Nightwing a good book to read. New (possible) bad guys, new supporting cast, and best of all, no references to the previous ark. Can we just assume it never happened? I know I will.

Other books this week include Dr. Strange: The Oath (going to buy today, I missed it somehow), 52 (duh), and Fantastic Four.

One book I got this week worth pointing out The Boys, which is gross, funny, nasty, and a great read. Warning, totally not for the kids. Hell, not for the 16 year olds!

Hulk continues to be fantastic, and X-men Phoenix Warsong is definitely worth your cash, if you're a big fan of Morrison characters.

Also, without pointing out the book, but I just want to say that lesbian superheroes is being a little overplayed right now. A lot of books are using it to break certain barriers, which is great, but I have to wonder if some people are just using it for shock value. Also, where are all the gay men? Every other superheroin is a lesbian, but there seem to be no gay superheros. At least there's Northstar.

ROBERT DOWNEY JR. IS IRON MAN

That's right, the buzz is everywhere. Me, I'm stoked, because if anyone can play an alcoholic playboy, it's RDJr. You like that nickname I gave him? All jokes aside, I love his work and his movies, this should really be amazing.

Is Booster Gold really dead?

Spoilers ahead...sorta.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

I'd like to say yes but there is 1 little thing that makes me think otherwise...Justice League of America #2. In the book we (still) find the big 3 going through who's in and who's not. Eventually someone brings up Booster Gold. Superman argues that they should vote him in, to honor Ted's memory, you know, since Ted Kord is dead. But wait, isn't Booster Gold dead (52). On top of that, Clark Kent not only watched Booster Die, but was the only reporter at the funeral.

Other than the mystery of Booster Gold (which really is just an issue I'm bringing up), JLA #2 was pretty good. There is a lot of character developement going on, all around the board. We got a little action with Vixen, but otherwise it's still voting on members (even though everyone knows who's in and who isn't). I just know that the awesome battle with the whole JLA is coming soon, so let's hope it's worth it.

This Week's comics makes my head explode...Sept 20th

I got a LOT of comics this week. So many, I'm only going to talk about the ones that are worth it. Here we go:

Civil War 4: War breaks out, and it is awesome. Everyone knows how good this is, no need to explain.

Astonishing X-men 17: What is GOING ON? This issue is just one crazy thing after another. Half of which I'm still scratching my head about. Still, it's one of the best books out there. I'm a huge Whedon fan...HUGE. One awesome thing I love about this book is that it actually does a good job writing Cyclops. I'm a big Scott Summers fan, and to see him do what he does in this book, well, it's awesome.

Moon Knight 5: Oh Taskmaster, now you've just gone and made Mr. Spector upset. Marc finally gets back into costume and gets ready to beat the living crap out of the lame corporate enemies. The book is getting better and the art is awesome.

Nextwave: Agents of h.a.t.e. #8: :I'm the Captain--I'm from **** Brooklyn--and I can barely understand **** ENGLISH!" Gold.

Civil War: X-men #3: If they don't kill Caliban...I'll kill writer Hine.

Ghost Rider 3: Flame-head vs Dr. Strange. Eh.

Flash 4: Getting better.

X-factor 11: The story continues to gain more twists and turns...and Madrox is aparently hot stuff, just ask Monet.

A dose of vitamin J

What would Jesus read? Christian comics, of course! And thanks to a new line, Jesus doesn't have to look far. The Guardian Line introduces three new series, including Code, a "a techno-savvy man of mystery whose revolutionary knowledge of Scripture empowers him to help others."

Or check out Joe and Max, which follows a "a feisty 11-year-old who, with the help of a Scripture-speaking guardian angel, carries out his mission to defeat evil."

Awesome!

Annihilation #2

I think I've said this before, but I'm not usually a huge fan out space comics. I try and try but sometimes I just get bored. It happened with Green Lantern, it's happening with Ion, but not with Annihilation. It's really got all you want in an outer-space epic. There's war, political tension, war, vengeance, war, mystery, war, an unstoppable evil, and war. I thought the Nova mini was great, and Nova continues to shine in this book. I'm looking forward to his own series afterwards. The scar is a nice touch, and his new costume is great.

Also, you got to love these covers!

In case you missed it...

While Marvel's CCC continues to develop, the civil war raging in the Archie universe has gone largely unnoticed in the comic community. What started in the flagship publication, fallout has now spread to "Jughead's Digest" and the traditionally light-fare "Betty and Veronica."

As a quick update, and the story arc is still far from complete, Jughead broke out of his heroin induced trance long enough to brutally murder Reggie. After readers saw him maniacally laughing while covered in his long time rival's blood, it's safe to assume that there's no going back for Jughead!

Stay tuned, more to follow!

Capt. Marvel goes on Trial.

Trials of Shazam came out, which has been slated as a reboot of the character and the mythos of the Marvel family. I'm a fan of Judd Winick's work for the most part. I enjoy his stories, his balance of plot and action, and the fact that his comics aren't trying to re-invent the industry. I like this, it's refreshing and enjoyable. This is what Trials of Shazam looks like it will be. I've read from interviews that his goal is to update the character for today, but the first issues suggest that this isn't going to be some drastic change (Superman blue anyone?). I enjoyed the first issue, it's fun, and I'm looking forward to the rest.

The guys at IGN have the first 5 pages of X-men: First Class.

Justice League of America TRICK

First off, don't read this if you haven't read Justice League of America #1.

It's a bit of a spoiler. But interesting either way!

----------------------------------------SPOILER---------------------------------
This HERE is a better explanation than what I typed up earlier. The big thing to note is the Green Arrow, Roy Harper switch. Watch this thread, hopefully someone will post comparison images. If not, I'm sure Wizard will.

Astonishing X-men...oh hell yes

I am so happy that Joss Whedon is doing this book. This is what the X-men should be, every momemt of every day. How do I begin to talk about this book without ruining anything. A daunting task I must say.

1) Kitty Pryde is awesome. We all know Joss loves his strong females, and boy does it show. She must go through 8 different emotions during this issue, from strategy, to pissed, to confused, to concerned, and beyond.

2) Wolvie is a danty child. We got a small taste of this back Quentin Quire put the whammy on him, but Joss takes it to a whole new level. Whedon really seems to have a love for Morrison's run, using characters and events from New X-men. To bad he can't fix Xorn, to bad no one can.

3) Still room for some funnies. Joss has a great talent for balancing some classic humor with the chaos and tension that's going on. He's so fun to read.

I wish his run would never end.

p.s. The art is amazing. :)

A Mix of BOOM and yawn - August 16

The BOOM:

Booster Gold (52 - #15)
Clay One-Eyed Laser monster things (Nextwave - #7)

The yawn:

Ghost Rider #2 (makes me want to cry)
Nightwing since Crisis (way to fail hard)

Nextwave was by far the best book I got this week, I didn't get many. I've got Ion and Boys waiting for me at the Comic Book shope, I got them late.

I also got Civil War: X-men, which is ok. I like seeing the original 5, minus a very dead Jean, teaming up. I'm really just interested to see where will stand after the events of Civil War. I really don't get how Bishop is pro-registration, it makes no sense to me, and his explanation in the book was also dumb. I also want that jerk with the squid stomach to get popped in the head. To bad he didn't get depowered. Oh, and Caliban, kill him too.

They really missed out on getting rid of the worst Mutants out there. I mean, who really said that Blob should be depowered and Caliban shouldn't. I mean really, does anyone like Caliban?

If you like Caliban, please send me 1 good reason why.

Better Civil War be late than your Girlfriend.

We're all sad, upset, angry, or down right violent about the month delay to Civil War and all the tie-in issues. I've decided, since Civil War is one of the coolest things to happen to Marvel since the Sentry hoax, to be cool and not cry. I like McNiven and Millar a lot, and think their stuff is great, so I'm letting them off the hook. Now if it was Liefeld, I wouldn't be so forgiving. Then again, I wouldn't buy his crap anyways, he can't draw.

Aug-10, a short list

I only got a few comics this week, I was getting so little that I had to add more. Here's a quick run down.

DC
52 #14- Still interesting, I like it as a whole.

Green Arrow #65- I like it. I've read negative things about it, but I think it's interesting how Widnick mixes the fact that Ollie is a total liberal with todays politics. No recommended for strict Republicans.

Civil War: Frontlines #5- I read it, some stories are better than others. It's cool but nothing to go crazy about.

Annihilation #1 - I really like this, I think it's going to be a really fun space war for Marvel. I usually hate Marvel space stuff, but this may change my mind. I really enjoyed Nova, and he's at the center of things here so I expect good things.

Incredible Hulk #97 - This entire story arc is brilliant. Keep Hulk off earth for another year if it's this good. I love it!

X3 to DVD

Marvel announced how much money they expect us to shell out soon for X3 the Last Stand on DVD. There is a normal version, with all kinds of goodies (like an alternate ending!), a Deluxe uber special fantastic edition with an original comic written by Stan "The Man" Lee, his first in 5 years (awesome). And of course, they'll be releasing a trilogy box set, duh.

I'm hoping to get both Ultimate Avengers movies soon, so I'll let you know how I feel about them. I'm excited, hope I'm not let down.

Who's side are you on

I've seen recently that the new fad for message boards is to do your own take on the "Who's side are you on" gimmick. I saw a nice one with Cap getting his lights punched out. Here is mine, probably not a shocker. Obey.

Joey Q on Colbert Report

Joe Quesada was recently interviewed on the Colbert Report. I went home for lunch to watch the repeat. You could tell that Quesada was excited, because you don't really ever see comic guys on programs like that. Maybe this the first step before we see Mark Millar on the Tonight Show. This definitely reflects the impact Civil War is having, showing that comics deal with issues as well as any television program or movie.

Morrison + Batman = Ninja Man-Bats

Yup, you heard it. Man-bat was crap, but Ninja Man-bats is awesome. Grant has done something a little different this time around with Batman. So far, it's not as "over the top" as a usual Morrison book (like New X-men or All-star Superman). Still, it seems will be having an action-packed, story driven, exciting, mystery, man-bat friendly Batman.

Morrison off the bat (get it, bat, batman, I suck) is getting to work. He's bringing back Bruce Wayne from he dead, recreating the dual persona which hasn't been focused on for a long time. He's also getting Batman out of Gotham and on vacation. Well, as much a vacation as Ninja Man-bats can offer. Still, Son of the Bat will prove to be an entertaining and Bat-world shaking run.
Me, I'm excited, and ready for the butt-kicking, but what does his large-headness think?

M.O.D.O.K. says: "The Batman makes very precise calculations, not nearly as precise as mine, but impressive for an average human. His adventures will prove to be very entertaining. Though, I still don't compute Jason Todd alive. Only possible solution, someone screwed up."

Is Civil War really unbiased?

In short, NO!

I mean really, does anyone think that this book is being portrayed as 1 sided? Iron Man may as well be replaced by the Red Skull and the rest of the Third Reich. Tony Stark is now a jerk, Spider-man is having second thoughts, Capitan America and the rest of the people who are on his side (X-men, X-factor, Daredevil, Young Avengers, Runaways, and 85% of the super-heroes out there). Who's on Iron Man's side? Thor, he's a friggin god, he's just trying to get his thunder on. Ms. Marvel, she done with the Brood yet? Mr. Fantastic? More like Mr. Crappy Husband.

Marvel has done a C+ job at best in making this a half-half war, and I don't blame Millar. Civil War alone is great. But every single friggin tie-in (Thunderbolts excluded) points towards Caps side.

Luckly I know who wins....M.O.D.O.K.

A.I.M. for a new America!

Reviews of the week: Crap, crap, more crap, and some new arcs

I started off the day with a slight headache. After picking up my books, it just got worse. Although I'm mostly to blame, I still pick up Supergirl and Nightwing. Why? I don't own a TV, so I can't watch NASCAR to get my dose of trainwrecks and human tragedy.

These books definitely fill the void. The current arc in Supergirl didn't really make sense at the beginning. Having the writers swtich one issue into the three part arc didn't help. Having everything "explained" in the third issue in a single page didn't help either. I was really looking forward to having Rucka take over the book. Too bad that only lasted a fucking issue.

Nightwing? I'm not going to even fucking start. At least the new artist is better. But that's all I can fucking say about this book that won't be a string of curses.

52 this week was a major let down. Although it was funny to see Captain Crazy, err Captain Marvel. I'm curious to see how his story pans out, but I think that's going to be done in Winnick's new book, which I'm very much looking forward to.

I'm not going to hog all of the books for the week, but I'm going to say this: I really liked the Spectre. I was very satisfied with the ending, and the arc as a whole.

The issue I would Kill for.

As we know, I love Ghost Rider. I was a HUGE fan of the second series with Danny Ketch. If you know anything about it, you know that the last issue was NEVER PUBLISHED. I cursed Marvel for years. They never finished GR as they promised. Pricks. Luckly Marvel got bettter and now I get this news from SDCC via IGN:

Ghost Rider: Writer Daniel Way provided some updates on the series, and artwork was shown from issue #3. Way said that when Johnny Blaze escapes from Hell, he creates a new sort of Hell on Earth, as he brings something back with him. He also said that there will be an explanation for how Blaze became Ghost Rider again. Finally, Marvel said it did have a plan for the unreleased Ghost Rider issue from the previous series.

Zero Hour: A Crisis of Too Many Crossovers

When I get bored at work, I like to read Wikipedia profiles on comic book characters. Today's adventures brought me to many classic characters like Dr. Mid-nite, Hourman, Dr. Fate, and a personal favorite, Hawkman. They all have ridiculous stories and retcons (especially Hawkman) and the all have some sort of tie to the Zero Hour event. Zero Hour, from what I understand, screwed everything up. Another 90's blunder. I found this site for your Zero Hour FAQ.

Review: Ghost Rider #1

Flame Head is BACK!

Let me start with the fact that GR is one of my all time favorite comics. It was the first comic I really read when I was younger (Danny Ketch days) and I never stopped. I'm actually more of a fan of the 90's Danny Ketch than I was with Blaze with the curse. Blaze was much cooler with the hellfire shotgun if you ask me. Now all Blaze does is complain. "waa, waaa, I'm in hell, waa, waa, I'm stuck as Ghost Rider even though I've never had controll over the demon."

The first issue is summed up in two sentence. "GR is in hell and Lucifer likes to trick him. GR is taken out of hell and Lucifer likes to trick him."

Honestly, nothing happens at all in this issue. It's pretty lame. It's been said that Daniel Way will be fixing all the screw ups that Marvel has done to GR's continuity while also explaining things like: Is Danny Ketch still Ghost Rider? According to the Marvel Knights Handbook, he is! Also, how the hell did Blaze become GR full time, and why is he in Hell? Zarathos, where the heck is he?

Can Daniel Way fix GR? I can only hope

Story: we'll see.
Art: Pretty Good.

M.O.D.O.K. says: Give it a chance ONLY if you love Ghost Rider. Otherwise, don't bother.

Review: X-men #188

The X-men revamp has finally happened. Last week Uncanny X-men came out, and even with the random bunch of mutants, it still looks promising. I'm really excited about it, there's action, there's a great story, and soon there will be big outer-space, alien fun! Woot! But X-men...not so much.

Though Mike Carey's first issue isn't bad, it didn't blow me away like Uncanny did. The team that Carey has put together is even stranger than the Uncanny line-up. Sabertooth AND Mystique?!?!? Whatever happened to having villians stay villians. Mystique I can buy, she's been at the mansion for a while now, and her solo series was a lot of fun, but Sabertooth? Did Marvel finally deciede that Wolvie is in too many books, so just use the next thing? It's a strech for me.

Rogue as a leader is a little much too, but I'll give it a shot. Iceman is always fun and it'd be interesting to see Cannonball and Cable (whenever he shows up) in something WITHOUT Rob Liefeld (who as we all know, can't draw).

I'm giving it a decent shot, as I do with anything X-men, and unless it's starts to get like a Claremont or Austin book, it'll get my 3 bucks.

Story: Ok
Art: Interesting, but not hooked yet.

M.O.D.O.K. says: Give it a shot, don't set your expectations to high. Pray for the best.
